In more detail

This wonderful itinerary encompasses the mythical region of Celtic Brittany and the stunning landscapes of Normandy, exploring a history dating from prehistoric times to the legendary WW2 Battlefields.

Brittany is characterised by its seaside towns and quaint fishing villages, but also boasts a history rich in Celtic myths and legends and on a trip through this region you will discover magnificent medieval chateaux, colorful country markets, the wonderful Pont-Aven painters and the most prolific collection of stone megaliths in the world.

Magnificent Mont St Michel is a highlight of this tour, staying overnight on the island itself, towered over by the extraordinary medieval Abbey and exploring the ancient cobblestone streets after the other tourists have gone left for the day.

Normandy is the home of Calvados brandy, fat happy cows and hence Pont L'Evêque, Livarot & Camembert cheeses as well as ancient Abbeys, William the Conqueror, the Bayeux Tapestry and Claude Monet?s garden at Giverny. It is a land of vast forests, villages of half-timbered medieval houses, sweeping coastline, chic resorts and picturesque ports yet it is only one hours train ride from Paris.

In 1944 for several months it was also the scene of some of the most remarkable feats of international cooperation, bravery, planning and luck that the world has ever seen in the successful D-Day landings that changed the whole course of WW2 and saved France from German tyranny.

For the next week you will experience the beauty, gastronomy, history and diversity of this magnificent part of Northern France with your tour manager Kate Stedman, who will share with you her intimate knowledge of this area and in Normandy, her extensive expertise as a military historian.
