In more detail

The Languedoc region: This corner of France is not traditionally as well known as other regions, but is ideal for the traveller looking for an experience “off the beaten track” that is not so frequented by tourists and yet offers a fascinating history, absolutely stunning countryside, and wonderful cuisine and wine. Located on the south-western border of France, part of our itinerary offers a Catalan flavour that combines the best of France and Spain.

Much of the history here concentrates on the Cathars, a “heretical” sect that was persecuted during the 13th century – their story lives on in captivating ruined, perched villages. Other highlights include visits to medieval villages and monastery, the half timbered market town of Mirepoix, and a train ride on “Le Train Jaune” (considered one of the most spectacular train journeys of Europe) through the French Pyrenees.

On this wonderful four star tour, we stay in an exclusive chateau-hotel in the glorious walled city of Carcassonne, and in a sea-view hotel in the lovely village of Collioure near the Spanish border. The Pyrenees mountain range offer a splendid backdrop throughout many of our day trips.

After the hotel-based week of the tour, we join the beautiful “Athos” for our unforgettable cruise on the Canal du Midi.
